| Jim on a hillside below the Rock of Cashel in Ireland |
After retiring from a successful career in business Jim had the opportunity to devote full time to his life-long
avocation - photography. With the encouragement of friends and family he finally decided to "go pro" in December 2002. Combining
his love of photography and travel has provided ample subject matter for his camera. The Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Wyoming,
Montana, Alaska, Italy and Ireland are a few of the places he has traveled from his native Florida to capture images.
Someone once wrote that "photography is 90% 'seeing' and 10% photographing" and Jim readily admits
that, since becoming actively involved in photography, he "sees" things he never saw before ... and sees everything differently.
Jim has over 200 images that have sold in one form or another. Most of them feature a single flower, bird, butterfly or other
creature. He also has landscapes and still lifes in his portfolio. Jim's images are primarily color, however he includes a
few black and white images in his portfolio.
Jim sells his photos primarily through Art Shows in Northeast,
Southwest and Central Florida. He has participated in Fine Art Shows in Gainesville, Lake Mary-Heathrow, Jacksonville (Mandarin,
Riverside and San Marco, Ponte Vedra), Melbourne, Micanopy, Ponce Inlet ,Kissimmee, Satasota, Marco Island, Naples, Coquina
Beach, New Smyrna Beach, St. Augustine, Winter Haven and Winter Garden - some just once but most, 3-4 years running. Entry
into all these shows is competitive through a 'jury' process.
In 2006 Jim had two photos for published
in Photographer's Edge. One, a Lady Gouldian Finch, was included in Volume 21; the other, a close-up of a frog, appeared in
Volume 23.
He sells his images as either complete, framed pieces or matted only for the buyer to make
the frame selection. Most images are also available on large canvas giclees. Jim has also created an extensive (and
quite popular) line of Note Cards called "Special Cards for Special People". Besides being sold at Art Shows, the cards are
currently being carried at a local retail store.
In 2004 he bought his first digital SLR (the Nikon
D1) and now works exclusively in digital. Jim feels this provides him extensive control over the creative process from image
capture to final print. After 'retiring' the D1 in 2005, Jim purchased the Fujifilm S3 Pro for its wide dynamic range (and
the fact that it supported Nikon lenses). In 2006 the Nikon D200 was added. In 2010 JIm finally add a 'full frame' camera,
the D700 which is currently the #1 camera in his bag. Jim uses a variety of Nikon lenses from an 80-400mm zoom telephoto for
wildlife to a 20-35mm wideangle needed for most landscapes. A 35-70mm completes the full range. He also uses a 105mm macro
lens for his 'up close and personal' work.
